The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which crosses the Detroit River to connect the U.S. and Canada, opened to traffic on Monday, July 27, 2026. The bridge’s route directly connects Ontario’s Highway 401 and Detroit’s I-75 and could save truck drivers an estimated 850,000 hours per year in wait times compared to current routes. The bridge also offers lower tolls than the neighboring Ambassador Bridge. The Canadian Trucking Alliance estimates trucking companies that use the new crossing could save $20,000 to $100,000 per month depending on fleet size.
