  1. Today's chart shows the performance of internet-related stocks following the end of the technology sector-led bear market ("dot-com crash") that ran from 3/24/00 through 10/09/02, as measured by the S&P 500 Index.
  2. As indicated in the chart, from 12/31/02-12/31/20, the Dow Jones Internet Composite Index posted an average annual total return of 19.83%, compared to 10.61% for the S&P 500 Index (not in chart), according to Bloomberg.
  3. The 10.61% average annual return is roughly in line with the historical norm for the S&P 500 Index. From 1926-2020 (95 years), the S&P 500 Index posted an average annual total return of 10.28%, according to Morningstar/Ibbotson Associates.
  4. On a cumulative total return basis, the Dow Jones Internet Composite Index was up 2,500.65% from 12/31/02-12/31/20. For comparative purposes, total U.S. retail e-commerce sales (quarterly/seasonally adjusted) rose from $12.74 billion in Q1'03 to $199.67 billion in Q4'20, or an increase of 1,567.27%, according to data from the Census Bureau and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
  5. A forecast from eMarketer on 6/9/21 indicated that U.S. e-commerce retail sales will rise from $791.20 billion in 2020 to an estimated $933.30 in 2021, or an increase of 17.96%. It sees sales rising to $1.65 trillion by 2025.
  6. Internet stocks, on average, tend to carry a higher price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple than the broader stock market. From 12/31/02-6/15/21, the average P/E on the Dow Jones Internet Composite Index was 57.45, compared to 18.54 for the S&P 500 Index, according to Bloomberg.
  7. As of 6/16/21, the Dow Jones Internet Composite Index's estimated year-end P/Es for 2021 and 2022 were 41.10 and 33.84, respectively, according to Bloomberg.
