Federal Student Aid reported that roughly nine million borrowers with $220 billion in outstanding federal student loans are in default as of March 2026, representing more than 13% of the total $1.64 trillion federally managed student loan portfolio. About one-fifth of recipients have at least one loan in forbearance, representing approximately $485 billion in outstanding balances.
