The United States Mint in Philadelphia pressed the last penny on Wednesday, November 12, bringing an end to more than 230 years of tradition, according to CNN. The penny, officially known as the cent, has been the smallest physical unit of American currency since the half-cent was discontinued in 1857. The Treasury Department estimates that nearly 300 billion pennies remain in circulation.
