The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that the national count of cattle and calves on feed dropped to a 75-year low of 86.2 million head on January 1, 2026, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation. Beef prices have surged amidst tightening supply and increasing demand. The composite all-fresh retail price of beef stood at a record $9.64 per pound in February 2026, up from $8.32 per pound in February 2025, according to USDA data.
